Native to Northern South America (French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, Brazil). Extensively naturalized in tropics and subtropics. Ornamental, Soil improver (green manure). Crops perennial , normally totally free-floating. Vegetative stems condensed, apart from when branching. Flowering stems erect , bending above after flowering, to twenty five cm, distal internode less than 4 cm. Sessile leaves in basal rosette. Quite prolific development and the dense mat-like floating vegetation contributed to clogged drains, waterways and rivers. Possibly the most intense aquatic weed at any time recognized in the tropics.
